Detection and Mitigation of Soft Failure due to Polarization-Mode Dispersion in Optical Networks

A combination of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) monitoring and network-layer switching managed by the control plane can reduce the outage probability due to PMD to an acceptable level for a link in an optical network, without physical-layer mitigation.
