We demonstrate short optical pulses of 27-ps FWHM using an all-silicon nonlinear transmission line, integrated with a pulse forming network. Furthermore we showed the feasibility to use the all-silicon NLTL in a transmission system at 10 Gbit/s data rates. The results indicated a 1.5 dB gain in receiver sensitivity for RZ over NRZ. Through further integration of components we see an impact of this technique to generate short optical pulses at 10 Gbit/s at reduced transmitter complexity and cost. An improved design of the NLTL should open up the possibility to operate at higher bit rates and shorter pulses.
