Cross phase modulation in discrete Raman amplifiers and its reduction

Our experiments confirm the theoretical prediction that the conventional DiscRA design produces a relatively high level of XPM, compared to a L-EDFA with similar gain. One way to reduce the XPM level, while using the same type of fiber, would be to reduce the output power of DiscRA by about 3ClB. Alternately, one can increase the DCF dispersion. This study shows that XPM generation is a problem which can arise in all types of fiber amplifier, and must be carefully examine in each situation.
