In conclusion, we have demonstrated the increase in the optical signal to Rayleigh noise ratio of a fibre Raman amplifier when a signal loss is incorporated in the gain fibre. Rayleigh noise was measured using a modified time domain extinction method. We have shown that the location of a gain flattening filter in the gain stage of a broadband Raman amplifier can be used to achieve significant suppression of DRS noise with small noise figure penalty.
