Network survivability is a key factor in the deployment of optical wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks since equipment failure can lead to a large disruption of communications. It is therefore very important to maintain an acceptable level of survivability while keeping network costs as low as possible. 1:N wavelength protection is a scheme aimed at protecting WDM networks from single channel failures and it is attractive because it allows both high survivability and low cost [1,2].
