In summary, a novel bi-directional wavelength path switched ring (BWPSR) has been proposed and demonstrated. Three optical channel layer protection schemes (1 + 1 UPSR, O-BLSR, and BWPSR) have been discussed and compared. BWPSR has an advantage of higher wavelength utilization efficiency comparing with UPSR, it also has an advantage of less propagation delay comparing with optical BLSR. Interoperability of BWPSR with other two vendor's WDM equipment has been examined. A fast protection by BWPSR has been demonstrated. In addition, a similar protection time has been experimentally confirmed by inter-working with and without other vendors' transport WDM equipment.
