This paper describes GRIDS, a runtime system that supports large-scale distributed simulation. GRIDS has many facets. For example, it supports a wide range of simulation architectures, ranging from discrete event based systems through to real-time, interactive simulations. It also has a messaging service which provides inter-process communications through a variety of addressing modes. A user process can publish a set of attributes which are distributed throughtout the simulation. Attributes can be queried, and are used as the basis of the GRIDS dynamic group model for multicasting. Dynamic groups implement filtering mechanisms in the form of mobile Java interest management policies. Group policies have continuous state, and autonomously update group membership based on non-trivial code. The context, architecture and operation of GRIDS is described in the paper, along with an overview of relevnce filtering techniques, and a detailed explanation of the GRIDS dynamic group model for multicasting. Detailed performance figures are presented towards the end of the paper, leading to suggestions for enhancing the performance and functionality of GRIDS.
