Phonon focusing effect on acousto-optic cell operation

To confirm necessity of taking into account the phenomenon of phonon focusing for designing of high-performance acousto- optic devices the first complete angular distributions of the energy fluxes carried by the acoustic phonons are numerically calculated in CdSe, ZnO crystals. Influence of the crystals properties modification on the phonon energy patterns, making possible these control, as well as a new focusing mode is predicted. The fluxes distributions obtained are applied to elucidate operating of the acousto-optic cells based on CdSe crystals. Good correlation is demonstrated between the changes in the experimental spectra in the range from 100 to 220 MHz and the focusing properties of the semiconductor plates investigated. It is concluded that the importance of this phenomenon, providing value of the focusing factor of 1.2 to 1000, is more evidence in planar devices in which semiconductor plate is simultaneously used both ultrasound generator and acousto-optic cell as well as in crystalline detectors of high-energy particles.
