Recovering condenser exhaust heat from a refrigeration system has attracted increasing attention over the past years, because of its energy and cost saving potential and reduced heat pollution to environment. One application is to produce servicehot water in a chiller unit where a refrigerant-water heat exchanger placed at downstream of the compressor works as a desuperheater to transfer heat from refrigerant gas to water. This paper presents an overview of the previous research work and recentdevelopment in the field of study. The recent development includes a number of new installations in southern China. Significant energy and cost savings have been achieved in these installations. Using cooling towers to extract free heat from ambient airin colder seasons features the latest development.
