Green buildings are part of the more general area of soft energy applications. Soft energy is taken to include both renewables and energy conservation along with thermodynamically more efficient cascading of energy through end uses of decreasingquality in the second law sense.On the community scale, a planner or engineer often has the opportunity to select from several soft energy sources but a tool that can assess all soft energies in a uniform, energetic, environmental and economic framework has not existed heretofore.This paper describes .8 set of algorithms that can examine the following soft energy sources with uniformity:solar PV wind biomass municipal solid waste cogeneration hydroelectric geothermalEach or any combination of the above can be simultaneously analyzed for the energy and environmental (i.e., emissions reductions) aspects. In addition, an optimization routine allows the user to specify several energy sources and find the least cost mixfor a specific site. Others forms of optimization are also available, and are discussed.
