Determination of Densification Parameter as A Function of Powder Characteristics

The research effort oriented towards the modelling of metal powder compaction necessitates a lot of powder characteristics in databases used by different models. Therefore, it would be beneficial to establish one parameter to describe the behaviour of powder that is sensitive to their properties. Such parameter would lead to a smaller number of input information to perform the compaction simulation. In order to identify such powder parameter, experiments were performed with powders of different size distributions, hardness and morphologies. This was accomplished using an instrumented triaxial die. Obtained results indicate that it is possible to determine a powder parameter which differentiates powder characteristics in response to the applied pressure. This parameter gives a measure of the volume reduction through compaction. Different empirical equations are proposed to express the parameter as a function of the powder characteristics.
