Ceramic and Metallurgical Coatings on Magnesium Components

Magnesium as a promising material for ultra lightweight design and components has become more important in automotive industry as well as in other technical applications. An important prerequisite for an industrial use of Mg-alloys, e.g. pressure casted ones, is an effective coating technology for the protection against corrosion and wear. Moreover, besides the chemical requirements also high optical and finishing standards have to be fulfilled to implement the technology in modern automotive manufacturing processes. The presentation gives an overview of new concepts for ceramic and metallurgical coatings on magnesium. Different approaches for coating technology i.e. thermal spraying will be presented.
