The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) and Takuma Co.,Ltd.(Takuma),developed and demonstrated a technology ,termed "METHANE de NOX" reburnign,which not only reduces No_x and dioxin emissions from MSW combustion,but also rincreases the systme thermal effiiency.Figure 1 illustrates the METHANE de NOX reburnign concept,which involves the injctions of naturla gas,together with recirculated flue gases (for mixing),above the grate to provide oxygen -deficient combustion conditions that promote the destruction of NO_x precursors,as well as No_x,Overfires air (OFA) is then injected at a higher elevation in the furnace,after sufficient resience time at these oxygen deficient conditions,to burn out the ocmbustibles.Injection of natural gas also improves the temperature and oxygen concentration profiles within the combustor,which allow a reduction in excess air,as well as an improvement in CO burnout.METHANE de -NOX has been successfully demonstrated in the United States and Japan.
