Recently Rapid Prototyping technologies (= rapid generation of models, prototypes and parts) have reached a key position compared to other technologies of mechanical engineering. Reduced innovation times and the demand of low prices for new products are the reason for this development. Increasing variety of products as well as decreasing lot sizes reinforced this trend in tool and shape manufacturing. Due to this rapid prototyping includes a high potential for the reduction of product development times.
