The spherical NH_3 tank of 5200m~3 of Sichuan Chemical Works (SCW) is one of the most potential dangerous chemical sources in the plant. Any big leakage of cracking might cause social disasters. In 1982, SCW began to set up a system for continuous detecting and monitoring this tank, and put it into practice in steps. In 1993, this subject was taken by the Labour Ministry as one of the key Scien-Tech problems to be tackled during the 8th five-year-plan period. After more than ten years hard work, this system had been built up and passed the national exams and acceptance. This article describes this precaution system and its functions.
