FRP Reinforcement of Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock Glulam Beams

With recent changes in availability of forest resources, high quality tension laminations necessary for glulam construction have become more expensive and increasingly diffcult to procure. Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) offer good promise to serve both as a substitute for the high quality wood laminations and as reinforcement for glulam beams. Glulam, like reinforced concrete, can be reinforced in tension to more efficiently utilize the wood's compressive strength.
