Application of dircet push technologies enables the three-dimensional delineation of subsurface contamination in a cost effective manner. Multilevel sampling for gasoline and diesel fuel using direct push tools allows the delineation of the distribution of the mobile phase, the dissolved phase and the nonaqueous phase entrapped above and below the water table. A critical benefit of the three-dimensional approach is the estimation of contaminant mass i the suburface. Such an estimate is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of reedial approaches. Today, software is available to generate excellent depictions of the three-dimensional distribution of contamination i nthe soil and groundwater. With this software, it is possible not only to evaluate contaminant distributions but also to estimate contaminant mass in the soil and groundwater. In this study, we present a case history of a LUST study site where this approach was applied.
