The recent advancement in orthopedic surgery could be attributed to the revolution in biomaterials. But each candidate biomaterials has negative attributes in its application for eventual bone grafting and repair. The concept of using in vitro cultured cells (tissue engineering) for repair of bone defects has great clinical potential for treatment of nonhealable lesion. The aim of our research is to develop a cell based repair material for bone that can be engineered in vitro and can be transplanted into bone defects, and to study the osteogenesis in vivo of allogenic osteoblast combined culture with HA and HA/TCP. In this study, We have examined the interaction of osteoblasts with HA and HA/TCP, compared their attachment and growth characteristics, expression of differentiated phenotype, and implanted the combined cultured osteoblast and calcium phosphate composites into rabbits. The outcome of the implantation was examined.
