This study reveals that freezing soils under field undisturbed conditions can be characterized by a frost heave parameter SPh, which is defined as the ratio of the rate of total frost heave and the temperature gradient of frozen fringe based on the segregation potential concept. The SPh values for mud flow deposits at the foots of Yatsugatake volcanoes are 117 X 10~(-5) (MM~2/(scentre dot deg C)) for Yokodake and 15 X 10~(-5) (mm~2/(scentre dot deg C)) for Kiyosato. In addition, simplified method, using SPh parameter, of predicting frost heave under field conditions is developed that should lead to conservative results.
