Discontinuity based methods like Discrete Element Method or Discontinuous Deformation Analysis are commonly used for structures in jointed rock masses. The author views that discontinuity based approach is more general than the conventional continuity based methods are applied to continuum and the accuracy of these methods are compared with the classical solution to show that they have a much wider applications.
