One of the criticality safety challenges in the next decade will involve the safe transport and storage of fissile materials. In order to ensure array subcriticality it is necessary to evaluate the effects of unit moderation and interstitial array moderation. Evaluation of the effects of moderation is complicated by the very large variety of fissile unit and array compositions and shapes. This study extends an exploration of array criticality summarized in earlier papers. One of the goals of this study is to provide an understanding of optimum array moderation in order to extend the American National Standard ANS/ANSI 8.7, Nuclear Criticality Safety in the Storage of Fissile Materials.
