Production of bitokoshi (Slightly Coated Paper): startup of a new on-machine coater and mill experiences at asahikawa mill
In November, 1995, an on-machine blade coater started up at Asahikawa Mill, Nippon Paper Industries. Asahikawa Mill is located on Hokkaido island (Figure 1), and the mill's production is 300,000 tons/year. The machine was rebuilt from a newsprint machine, and was equipped with two blade stations followed by HSNC (Hot Soft Nip Calender). This machine was modified to produce Bitokoshi (Slightly Coated Paper). In this paper, we review the status and characteristics of bitokoshi through the start up project and the mill experiences at Asahikawa mill.
