We deal with electromagnetically drivenflows and their influence on the mass transfer throughan interface between a mercury pool and a covering waterlayer. This experiment is devoted to simulate a refiningladle. The liquid metal pool is located in the singlephase coil which may be supplied with alternatingelectric current with various frequencies. According tothe coil current frequency, various types of flow regimemay be obtained, namely: bulk flows, surface wavemotions. Firstly, we review some experimental resultsconcerning the characteristics of the turbulent flow.Secondly, we analyze the effect of various types ofsurface flow on the mass transfer coefficient by meansof an electrochemical method, which is used to measurethe instantaneous mass transfer across the liquid metal interface.
