Since long, electromagnetic fields have beenused in metallurgical industry, to heat, to melt and tostir electroconducting materials. Basic research in MHD,(Magnetohydrodynamics) were always supporting theprogress of conventional process. The stronginteraction between MHD and Materials Processing gaverise during the ten past years to a new field of researchwhich revealed to be a high interest for industrialapplications: this new field is called EPM forElectromagnetic Processing of Materials. Whereas theuse of alternating, traveling or rotating magneticfields brought successful innovative technologies, newstrends of EPM have appeared based on the exploitationof high intensity D.C. fields produced bysuperconducting magnets. Some examples are given toillustrate actual EPM activities and futher developments.
