The new approach to design of operation management system allows its users to design advanced high performance network management system for ocean optical cable communication network. The functions and architecture of the operation management system are discussed in detail and described by a six-layer model. Some key information processing techniques, including Geographic Information System (GIS), Decision Support System (DSS), Expert system (ES) and Object-Oriented (OO) programming, are employed to support the system design and implementation. On the other hand, some advanced CASE tools such as OMTool and Prokappa are also employed to design and implement fast the system prototype. A commercial GIS package is used as a tool or enviro ment to integrate ES, DSS and other software modules. Our final experiments shown that the approach-based operation management system has very satisfactory performance. The paper discusses principle, application and key techniques of the approach to design of the operation management system of ocean optical cable network.
