During the last tow decades there has bene tremendous research and development activity in the area of smelting reduction. Some of this and the present state of technology development have been reviewed. During smelting reduction processes, large quantities of gases generated during reduction of iron oxide in molten in molten slag result in foaming. Better understanding of reduction kinetics and this foaming phenomenon is becoming necessary. It has been observed that slag properties play an important role. A 35 kW plasma reactor, designed and fabricated in this Laboratory, has been used in studying smelting reduction of slags containing 3-50 pct FeO. Data on kinetics and foaming have been generated for experiments conducted with or without oxygen injection. The power input could be reduced by 50 pct when coal and oxygen were injected into the liquid bath.
