The flexibility of oxygen top and bottom blowing according to the K-OBM technologie allows for a variety of applications in metallurgical processes. compared to competitive technologies, K-OBM offers distinct advantages and benefits in terms of productivity, metallurgy and operational costs. Examples are given both for carbon and stainless steelmaking as well as for production of ferroalloys. Moreover the metallurgical advantages, the high liquid steel yield and especially the low investment costs are utilized for the conversion of open-hearth plants into K-OBM converter steelmaking works where the whole existing buildings, cranes and infrastructure is utilized. With this process family about 55 million tons of carbon and 1,9 million tons of stainless steel are produced per year with a cumulative amount of 700 million tons produced world-wide up to now.
