The Romelt Process is a bath smelting technology for cnverting iron oxides (either virgin iron ores or iron bearing waste materials) to blast furnace-grade pig iron using non-coking grades of coal as a fuel and reductant. As such, it can be classified among the many new ironmaking technologies (e.g. the Corex Process, the HIsmelt Process, the AISI Direct Steelmaking Program and the Japanese DIOS Project) which are emerging for the coal-based production of liquid pig iron. There is little doubt that significant rewards will come to those able to commercialize a low cost method of producing pig iron using low grade feed materials unsuited to the blast furnace route.
