A PRACTICAL APPROACH FOR CALIBRATION INTERVAL

Laboratories assign calibration intervals as a rule of thumb. In such cases, while the calibration intervals remain fixed, the measured reliability varies from equipment to equipment. It is more scientific to keep the reliability fixed by varying the intervals, if needed. To ensure adequate reliability, taking the cue from NCSL RP-1, a procedure has been evolved by ETDC, Madras to assess the measurement reliability of classes of equipment. The data handling which is a cumbersome process in such tasks has been made easy, through the Computer Aided Laboratory Management (CALM) software of the Centre, to keep track of the performance of the equipment at the time of calibration and calculating reliability. The Centre assesses the measurement reliability of the equipment classes at yearly intervals for adjusting the calibration intervals depending upon the reliability achieved. This dynamic process will increase the confidence of the users as well as the centre with regard to the performance of the equipment calibrated.
