Confirming the propriety of a model of the residual DC caused by ions stuck at an interface between a LC layer and an alignment layer, characterization was made on ions contained in a LC layer, providing a probability that the ions are dissolved from the alignment layer. LC materials were characterized from a viewpoint of their resistant properties against such a contamination, and a novel class of substances were well evaluated to be effective to actualize low driving-voltage LC mixtures with improved image-sticking properties.
