The collimating system of backlight is required to improve the LCD's viewing angle. This paper presents a method of realizing the collimating of LCD backlight with graded- refractive-index-rod microarray on the outer of device. The optical principle and the effect of material and structure parameters on collimating properties are investigated in theory. The results of calculation and preliminary experiment are given. Collimating light with its diffuse angle lower than $POM@10$DGR and small chromatism is obtained.
