In addition to ongoing efforts to reduce fuel consumption, chemical and noise pollution levels, future improvements for commercial engines mainly focus on economic manufacturing and maintenance of engine components. As a consequence, for future turbo-components, compact designs featuring low stage and blade counts are pursued. In order to meet the high economic and ecological challenges, the design process must ensure that all physical reserves are to be completely explored using powerful and validated numerical design tools. The paper gives an overview on the application of various advanced numerical tools representing a necessary qualification for the competitive design of present-day and future aero engines.
