Viscoelastic fiber drawing is approached from the standpoint of characterizing the structural evolution of the fibers during drawing to provide a physical basis for the viscoelastic properties used in the analysis. Microstructural information related to the temperature and rate-dependent viscosity and relaxation is obtained through controlled drawing and annealing of fibers. The material is characterized by density, orientation and energy storage measurements. The analysis of the fiber drawing process incorporates nonisothermal, viscoelastic effects in a fully two-dimensional treatment to improve understanding of phenomena such as draw resonance.
