In the proposed research, an airborne acousto-ultrasonic technique will be implemented in closed loop control of tape laying. In the first phase of this research, the focus has been on predicting areas of poor bonding in composites via ultrasoni-cally generated (liquid coupled ) longitudinal shear waves. Specific accomplishments include: construction of a nondestructive test facility, development of signal processing software, and evaluation of mechanical bond strength using destructive and nondestructive techniques. Future work will entail developing an aircoupled ultrasonic inspection technique and integrating this technique into an existing tape laying apparatus for real time process control.
