STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING CANE WEEVIL BORER

Cane weevil borer has re-emerged as a serious pest of sugarcane since the widespread adoption of green-cane harvesting and trash blanketing in northern Queensland. Severe damage by cane weevil borer is confined to the high rainfall belt between Cairns and Tully. Mossman and Ingham districts with lower rainfall (2000 mm per annum or less) have little or no weevil borer damage. The prospects for control of weevil borer with resistant cultivars of cane, efficient harvesting practices, rat control and avoiding excessive use of nitrogenous fertiliser are discussed in relation to previous research in Hawaii and past and present observations in Queensland.
