Segmentation of nuclear images in automated cervical cancer screening

This paper describes an efficient method of segmenting cell nuclei from complex scenes based upon the use of adaptive region growing in conjuction with nucleus-specific filters. Results of segmenting potentially abnormal (cancer or neoplastic) cell nuclei in Papanicolaou smears from 0.8 square $mu@m resolution images are also presented.
