The calcuation of disinfection effectiveness is curcial,both for the cost-effective applciation of ozone and for demonstrating compoliance with the disinfection requirements of the Surface Water Treatment Rule.Thests at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's 5.5-mgd (20,800-m~3/day) oxidation demonstratio plant were performed to compare alternative ozone disinfection calculation methods to a more cumbersome benchmark mehtod.THe tests showed that a simplified mehtod using dissolved ozone residuals form two locations in a reactive-flow chamber and an exponential decay assumption did not differ substantially from a benchmark mehtod using residulas at five locations.A more conservative clauclation mehtod ocmmonly used by other utilities,however,underestimat4ed the ozone disinfection credit within the reactive-flow chamber by enerally more than 40
