This work proposes a method of preventing critical damage to civil structures due to earthquakes by suppression of damaging vibrations. The axial-force-rated (AFR) actuators enable vibration suppression without the need for external power which is unavailable during earthquakes. The design of the control system is based on the energy to be dissipated. A method for estimation of energy to be dissipated is outlined. In statically indeterminate structures complete dissipation of vibrational energy with AFR actuators is not possible due to the presence of redundant members. The permanent strains in the members with AFR actuators may create elastic strains in all the members. This paper focuses on vibration control in statically indeterminate structures with AFR actuators.
