BRINGING RADIO PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION INTO THE DIGITAL AGE

The impact of the compact disk has reached tamers of the globe. Radio listeners are demanding high fidelity audio quality, even if the programming originates 1000 km away. This paper discusses how digital signal processing and satellite transmission technologies combine to provide a flexible, yet highly cost effective and reliable means to distribute radio programs from a main studio facility to radio stations for re-broadcasting. Various transmission technologies are discussed and tradeoffs presented. Furthermore, several case studies are presented that demonstrate this technology in use.
