The author considers end-to-end rate-based flow control in high speed broadband networks. Since ATM is a promising way to achieve efficient multimedia transmission in the broadband networks, he supposes an ATM network underlies between the user terminals. To prevent overrun at the receiver and network congestion, the sender adapts its transmission rate to the service rate of the bottleneck. That is, the sender adopts its rate to the service rate of the congested switch or of the receiver. A queueing model is built to evaluate the performance of the flow control.
