The paper investigates two aspects of functioning of adaptive systems, i.e., the influence of their time delay and the spectral dependence of the quality of phase correcting. Numerical analysis based on the most reliable model profiles of spectral density of fluctuations of atmospheric refractivity. In the first part of the paper, classification of the optical adaptive systems as dynamic feedback systems has been made. Systems with permanent delay, a `high- speed' adaptive system as well as a new class of system, i.e., predicting adaptive systems, are investigated.
