A rockfill embankment formed by end tipping limestone and granite rock into a tailings pond was observed to be sliding along it's base during and after the raising of fill and during the driving of steel piles behind the rockfill embankment. In view of continued sliding movements at one part of the rockfill compaction grouting of base of rockfill was carried out to stabilize the embankment. The compaction grouting successfully arrested the movements but large deflections occurred during the grouting process resulting in lateral deflection of the piles.
