In free space optical communication systems the optical transmitter is one of the most critical parts since it affects the mechanical design, mass, power budget, transmission bitrate and reliability of the whole system. Particularly the transmitter output power and the quality of the optical output beam are of concern. Further aspects are the electrical-to-optical power conversion efficiency, complexity and reliability of the transmitter. This paper gives an overview on recent developments in the field of high power transmitters for intensity modulation/direct detection systems and reports on the design, performance and lifetest of the high power semiconductor laser transmitter developed at ANT. This high power transmitter adopts the apertured mirror scheme.
