The dielectric and accelerated aging tests on prototype +or-500 kV DC oil-filled self-contained cables are discussed. The extensive test program was required to evaluate the high-voltage cables for the St. Lawrence river crossing of the +or-500 kV Quebec-New England HVDC power transmission system. The main elements of the test program are related. The required insulation levels, the characteristics of the cables supplied by three different manufacturers, and the cables' installation for the type tests and accelerated aging tests are described. Details of the test program and procedures followed to carry out the tests are given. Findings of the tests are also reported.
