By consequent refinement and optimization of the modern continuous casting and hot rolling technology VAI developed a Thin Slab technology (CONROLL) which allows to utilize the cost saving potential of near net shape casting for high quality strip production. The specifics of the CONROLL plant concept are outlined. After comprehensive theoretical investigations VAI tested in close cooperation with AVESTA of Sweden the thin slab casting for stainless steel grades so that a share of the product mix can be produced via one stage instead of two stage rolling. With VOEST ALPINE Stahl Linz the technology was applied to commercial carbon steel grades ranging from special deep drawing to microalloyed line-pipe grades. The mechanical testing showed equivalent and even improved mechanical properties of hot and cold rolled strip produced via the thin slab route compared to the conventional production. From these results it can be concluded that this technology represents a possibility of low cost strip production even for medium annual capacity.
