A processing environment is described for programming a complex computing device. The target machine, HECATE, consists of a set of specialized hard-wired operators for image processing managed by a two-layer front-end computer network. To provide enough generality, two complementary help programs based on different strategies were jointly created. The first system, GENIUS, is embraced by a fully interactive conception methodology which gives a nonhacker programmer the possibility of creating his own environment. This system is an interface generator. The second system, OSIRIS (Operating System Including Real Intelligent Service), is split into two parts: an application-free kernel including the end-user facilities together with the application database management system, and the application database itself which in this case contains HECATE's image processing macro commands. For the complete command, both tools are organized into the application program creation and execution environment.
