The gas industry, and more generally the global energy sector, demands for better-performing, longer-lasting, safer, cost-effective and more environmental friendly materials. The requirement for durability of infrastructures and pipes related to anticorrosion and fire resistance means to have a relatively long service life, without requiring an inordinate degree of maintenance, and to reach higher safety standards. The emerging of nanotechnology, together with the capability of materials manipulation in the nanoscale level, offer new routes not only to preserve the characteristics and physical properties of the materials, increasing life-time, but also to provide added functionalities compared to conventional materials.
