Analysis and classification of Wi-Fi access link influence on Internet throughput measurements

The German national regulatory agency (NRA, Bundesnetzagentur) and other NRA and third parties offer throughput measurement tools for end customers to test and compare the current data transfer rate of the Internet access services with the contracted data transfer rate offered by network operators. With the Regulation (EU) 2015/2120 of the European Parliament, the EU grants further rights to end customers should the deviations be significant discrepancy, continuous or regularly recurring. One ongoing shift in user behavior is the increasing use of Wi-Fi connected devices to test Internet access speed. This leads to a fundamental problem in throughput test, as until now, throughput test tools cannot derive if the measured throughput is limited by the local Wi-Fi network or the Internet Service Provider's network. This paper presents a new mechanism to validate throughput measurements over Wi-Fi. First tests measurements show promising results to validate not all, but a larger number of throughput tests over Wi-Fi. The evaluation focuses on IEEE 802.11ac technology.
