The aim is to remove chlorine from zinc dross by optimizing the microwave roasting process using response surface methodology (RSM). The effect of three major experimental factors such as temperature, time and stirring speed on the process has been investigated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). By applying least squares method and multiple regression analysis on the experimental results, the polynomial regression equation is found to explain the dependent variable by considering the significant terms. In the basis of this model, the optimum conditions that contribute to the maximum dechlorination rate are considered to be a roasting temperature of 527.78 °C, time of 143.78 min and stirring speed of 9.33 r/min. The dechlorination rate of 91.97% is obtained from repeated tests at optimal conditions, which is in accordance with the predicted data of 92.31%. The above results suggested that RSM can be applied in the dechlorination of the zinc dross effectively.
