Miniaturized machine tools have been proposed for the effective production of micro/meso-scale components, and the comprehensive study on their dynamic behavior should be required for the successful development. In particular, in the case of the miniaturized grinding machine tool, the vibration characteristics of the rotating system is generally of much significance since the rotational frequency is usually very high and the stiffness of the machine tool structure is decreased. Therefore, this paper studies the dynamic characteristics of the miniaturized grinding machine tool with the consideration of the rotor-dynamic behavior of the spindle system. The rotor-dynamic behavior of the spindle system is analyzed based on the order tracking technique. In addition, the experimental modal analysis on the miniaturized grinding machine tool is conducted and its results are combined with the rotor-dynamic characteristics to set up the experimental conditions for the performance evaluations. The performances of the miniaturized grinding machine tool are experimentally evaluated by investigating the surface integrity of the ground workpiece.
